Addition & Renovation, neutral bay.

Heritage renovation in Neutral Bay, Sydney.

Brief

Our clients, who are also from our Carranya Road project, bought this terrace house in Sydney’s Neutral Bay, which sits within the Local Council’s Heritage Zone.

After a number of small add-ons over its lifetime, the home felt a little unloved, but had a lot of potential.

The clients had a view to extend the functional living areas of the home and to renovate the internals & externals to modernise and stylise.

A few years ago, John and his team at HCH built a new architecturally designed home for us in Riverview, Sydney. As our experience was so good that time, we had no hesitation asking HCH to
handle our new building project, an extensive renovation of an old heritage listed 1880’s house in Neutral Bay, Sydney, which completed in August 2022.

Approach

The clients involved us early in the design phase so we could have input in to the most appropriate building methods - considering outcomes and budgetary objectives.

Working alongside Natalie Condon Architects, we had many special consideration to take in to account due to the heritage zone requirements.

The open and collaborative approach continued through the build, resulting in a quality structure & aesthetic.

Method

The project started with major demolition work to remove all dysfunctional areas, including the existing kitchen, bathroom and laundry.

New structural steel portals, brickwork and timber framing was used to create the contemporary form.

Once the team had completed the structural work, it was time to introduce the finishes.

Solutions

A key challenge for this project was to prop and support the heritage elements of the existing house above.

This was necessary to strip out all existing utility areas on the ground floor, underpin with the new structure and open up the living areas at the rear of the home.

John’s expertise and collaborative manner were especially valued, because the new project involved renovation of an old heritage house, where existing structural problems needed to be dealt with and new additions matched to and made complementary to heritage parts of the existing house. When decisions needed to be made John always provided me with options, cost estimates and his valued advice on what would be the best structurally and aesthetically.

I have no hesitation in providing a strong recommendation for HCH on any building project.
